Vince Young Arrested for DUI
Former NFL Quarterback’s 2nd Arrest Since 2016
For the second time in two years, former NFL quarterback and Texas Longhorn standout Vince Young was arrested for driving under the influence. It was his second arrest for DUI since 2016.
Young was first arrested in Texas in 2016 after being pulled over for dangerous driving. He would later be sentence to a year and a half of probation for this offense. At the time he issued an apology to his fans. Made it seem like he was truly sorry for his actions.
On Monday, February 4, 2019, Young was arrested again for driving under the influence in Fort Bend County, Texas. Young was booked into jail and is said to be taking full responsibility to his actions. Young issued a statement on his official Twitter account apologizing to his friends, family, and fans. He also assured that he will take action to ensure this never happens again. Haven’t we heard that before?
Some of Vince Young’s non-criminal accomplishments include: Young was the runner up to Reggie Bush in the Heisman Trophy race while he was playing for the University of Texas. He also led his team to a victory in the 2006 Rose Bowl. Following his Rose Bowl performance he was the third overall pick in the NFL Draft in 2006. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with whom he would spend five seasons. As a Rookie he was voted the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and was selected to the AFC Pro Bowl as a backup. He then played one season with the Philadelphia Eagles. In his final years he spent one year contracts with the Bills, Packers, and Browns.
Star on the Decline
Young played just 5 years in the NFL before being released by the Eagles and has been on a slow decline ever since. Both of his DUI arrests have happened after his NFL career. Perhaps he is struggling now that he isn’t in the spotlight. As a last ditch career revival, he recently attempted to play for the Canadian Football League. His time with the CFL was quickly cut short when Young suffered a hamstring injury.
Hopefully the punishment he faces for his 2nd DUI arrest will do more to deter further driving under the influence than the 18 month probation he received in 2016. Texas, compared to states with more strict DUI punishment, like Arizona, needs to consider a tougher stance on driving under the influence, especially 2nd conviction DUI’s like Vince Young is facing.
